Houston’s industrial east side — home to the Ship Channel, dozens of refineries, and the nation’s largest petrochemical complex — created one of the highest concentrations of asbestos exposure in American history. We’ve mapped 69 documented sites across 24 named Houston neighborhoods.
Houston’s identity as the “Energy Capital of the World” came at a significant human cost. The city’s industrial expansion from the 1920s through the late 1970s was built on asbestos — used in virtually every refinery, power plant, shipyard, and industrial facility as insulation, fireproofing, and pipe covering.
The Houston Ship Channel, stretching 52 miles from Galveston Bay to the Port of Houston, became one of the densest concentrations of asbestos exposure in American history. Workers at facilities operated by Shell, Texaco, Humble Oil (later ExxonMobil), Gulf Oil, Union Carbide, and dozens of others were exposed daily — often without any protective equipment or warning.
The latency period of 20–50 years means that workers exposed in the 1950s and 60s are being diagnosed today. Harris County consistently ranks among the top five counties nationwide for mesothelioma incidence.

The clock starts on your diagnosis date, not your exposure date. Missing the 2-year deadline permanently bars your lawsuit (Tex. Civ. Prac. & Rem. Code §16.003). Wrongful death cases also carry a 2-year window from the date of death.
Contact a mesothelioma attorney immediately after diagnosis. Trust fund claims and VA benefits can be pursued simultaneously with a lawsuit at no upfront cost.
