Textile Mills and Asbestos in the Upstate

Spartanburg and the surrounding Upstate region were once home to one of the densest concentrations of textile mills in the American South. Spartan Mills and Mayfair Mills, along with dozens of smaller operations throughout the county, ran continuously from the late 1800s through the late 20th century, powered by steam boilers wrapped in asbestos insulation.

Mill mechanics, boiler room operators, and maintenance workers who serviced steam pipes and power plant equipment faced the highest exposure, though asbestos-containing floor tiles, ceiling materials, and machine room insulation were common throughout mill buildings. Many of the manufacturers who supplied asbestos-containing insulation products to Upstate mills have since established bankruptcy trust funds.

As the American textile industry declined through the late 20th century, many Spartanburg-area mills closed, but former workers exposed during peak operating decades continue to be diagnosed with mesothelioma today.

Yes. Spartanburg-area textile mills used asbestos extensively in boiler rooms, steam pipe insulation, and machine room fireproofing for most of the 20th century. South Carolina’s 3-year statute of limitations (S.C. Code § 15-3-530) runs from the date of mesothelioma diagnosis.
